To help your cooling unit run efficiently and use less energy, prepare your space in advance. Keep curtains closed during hot, sunny periods to block out heat, and open windows at cooler times of the day or night to let fresh air in — then close them again before the room warms up. This way, the air conditioner starts from a cooler baseline, allowing it to bring the temperature down faster and operate for less time.
Portable air conditioners pull in warm air from the room, pass it over a cold evaporator coil to extract the heat, and then release the cooled air back into the space. The unwanted heat and moisture are expelled through an exhaust hose, which usually vents out of a nearby window. This cycle repeats until the room reaches your desired temperature, giving you targeted cooling wherever you place the unit.
Fans don’t actually lower the air temperature, but they circulate air to create a cooling effect that makes you feel more comfortable.
