Relative humidity is the amount of moisture in the air compared to the maximum it can hold at a certain temperature. Keeping it balanced helps prevent damp and keeps your home comfortable.

The water in a dehumidifier comes from moisture in the air. As humid air passes through the unit, it cools down, causing water vapor to condense into liquid, which is then collected in a tank or drained away.

The ideal humidity level for a home is typically between 40% and 60%. This range helps maintain comfort, prevents mold growth, and protects furniture and electronics. Levels below 40% can feel too dry, while levels above 60% may encourage dampness and allergens.

A dehumidifier works by removing excess moisture from the air to reduce humidity levels. It draws in humid air using a fan, then passes it over cold coils. As the air cools, the moisture condenses into water droplets, which are collected in a tank or drained away. The dry air is then reheated slightly and released back into the room, helping maintain a comfortable and healthy indoor environment.

A dehumidifier typically starts to show noticeable results within a few hours, depending on the room size, humidity level, and the unit’s capacity. In very damp spaces, it might take 12 to 24 hours to bring humidity down to a comfortable level. For ongoing effectiveness, it’s best to run the dehumidifier continuously or on a humidity-controlled setting until the desired level is reached.
